Our brief for this project was to plan and create a 60 second advert about a Unilever product of our choice, working in groups of 3 or 4. In our group we decided to make a ad on Marmite we decided this as it is a controversial product with only a select few like the product, we wanted to make a likeable character to advertise with. The current target audience are mainly adults and people who like the product. We decided to focus on children and looking at how to advertise to kids, so they would want to try the product.
We sent out a self-made questionnaire and got 12 people to tell us their thoughts, we got a lot of positive reviews about the animation and how it brought the ad to life, however to improve we needed to make the story line clearer and have more time working on the smoothness of the animation, but all 13 people seemed very happy with it in general, also commenting on the upbeat music.
With the animation and simple script, I felt we did a good job of appealing to children, the cute mascot being targeted at a younger audience, and the small use of dialogue easy for them to understand. Within the advert there is a pattern of bright lighting which would also appeal to the audience, the shots are clear and snappy and draw focus into the animation, the editing also helps with this quick advert like pace, with speedy transitions and a simple message also shown with the slogan we chose at the end, ‘you either, love it, or hate it.’ Also linking to the product. The story line also clearly telling the story of the monkey looking for the marmite, as shown by the animations and shots. I feel the animation is ok, it was my job to do it and I tried my best in the time given, it is pretty simple with controlled movements and storyboard to follow. It’s not the smoothest animation but I feel it still shows the message we were trying to portray, and looks like a good advert for children, the idea of a animated mascot also links to aesthetics for children and what children want to see in advertising to draw them in. The message we were trying to send was how if a cute cartoon character likes to eat marmite it might make it more appealing to children and see there’s nothing wrong with eating it drawing more future buyers in so if they try and like it as children in the future, they would continue to buy it.
Overall, we didn’t break any of the BCAP’s codes and kept the advert sweet and simple with no controversial images or language within the 60 seconds, the music also non-copyrighted so free for use, and the character was our own design and idea also. It also fit its purpose of targeting a new audience.
Our original intentions were pretty close to the finished production, we did the animation we wanted to do and kept to the shot list and storyboard and kept to our idea of using a mascot as our main source of advertisement. We had a good response from our tutor and class makes most of them liking the monkey and saying how it adds to the overall theme and idea of targeting children.
I am somewhat pleased with our advert I feel we all did a lot of good work and worked well together to finish it, we all did a good share of work and were very supportive when helping me with tips and ideas on the animations. We talked a lot and used our time well managing to finish just on the deadline, just unfortunately not getting a lot of responses in time, however it still ended up well and we finished our advert to a standard we were happy with.
I feel the animation could have been better one my part but by the time we had a final cut there was only a week and a half to work with, and I am still happy that I managed to do what I managed to do.
