TV Advert: PG Tips Advert analysis

For this project I watch the PG Tips monkey advert, this ad was used to promote PG tips a british tea company. First aired in 2007 the ad carried on to have over 10 different ads called a series, it also parodied ‘when harry met sally’. also having lots of changes in logos and slogans like ‘Put the kettle on’ ‘Helps you focus’ ‘It’s the taste’ ‘Keep it tea’ Aimed at all audiences, they are part of a series with lots of ads in different styles, times, and genre and used celebrity endorsement (Johnny Vages) it has a realist narrative to engage and relate with the viewers with the content in the ad relating to an everyday event its humorous with slapstick, a talking toy, sound effects, and a good script.

Mainly focused at British people due to the stereotype of British people and Tea, 18-100 mainly adults but also aimed at young adults and the elderly. People who can go to the shop to buy it and would want to but it. No barriers against an audiences education, gender, social status, disabilities, or income, focusing more on ‘The taste’ rather than who it’s aimed for. Also focused on a British audience with a English celebrity and English humour in rainy day ad, and layout of the set.

Usually aired in the morning and early evening as this is when most people would have a cup of tea. and in-between morning news and day time television and then late night shows giving the audience a time to make a cup of tea before the show comes back on. As a series it also keeps the British audience on their feet and creates excitement when a new ad comes out rather than seeing the same ad over and over, a series creating a short story that the audience can be involved in and enjoy seeing making them also create a good connection to the product.

The ads use of a cute comical monkey and a British comedian make the ads funny and enjoyable, short and snappy but still having a narrative to engage the viewers.

These ads also follow AIDA, the ad uses reminder ads after the main on in between other adverts to remind the viewer of the product and keep them interested, also attracting their attention with bold lettering and only a few words, also using comedy to also do this, also using its slogan to focus on the product and things involving tea, i.e. put the kettle on to invoke action. Also talking about the natural ingredients and even promoting helping the rainforest to make people want to help by buying the product using charity for sale and a good cause making the company keep a good name.

Johnny Vages' distinctive voice good for capturing the attention of the audience to and the cute mascot also making the ad lovable and enjoyable to watch with the chemistry between the two.

In the UK there are 2 main regulations of British adverts these are ASA and CAP, ASA is responsible for the ads quality and discretionary, responding to complaints and conducting research to find what the pubic finds acceptable and remove ads if needed. CAP is a organisation that helps companies make ads that comply with the rules of advertising and make sure the company don't advertise anything they shouldn't or that would upset anyone.

In the advert it uses bright lighting and pastel colours to show the friendliness of the ad and how simple the product is, also using mid shot camera angles to put us on the same level as the people in the ad showing equality and a no bias view just because the advertiser is a celebrity. The music also very sweet and upbeat the keep the viewer happy,  but the monkey puppet being the main attraction with its cute demeanour funny voice and relatability.

Documentary: Research

In the HRC Foundation’s 2012 survey of LGBTQ youth, about 10 percent of respondents identified themselves either as “transgender” or as “other gender,” and wrote in identities like “genderqueer,” “gender-fluid” or “androgynous.” This suggests that a larger portion of this generation’s youth are identifying somewhere on the broad transgender spectrum.

Anti-transgender violence– At least 13 transgender women were murdered in 2014, and 2015 is on track to see even higher numbers. These women were stabbed, shot, strangled, and burned; killed violently by intimate partners or strangers. According to the 2013 National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) report on hate violence against lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and HIV-affected (LGBTQH) communities, 72 percent of the victims of LGBTQ or HIV-motivated hate violence homicides in 2013 were transgender women, and 67 percent were transgender women of color

2017 Press Release 325 Trans and gender-diverse people reported murdered in the 2017

2,609 reported cases in 71 countries worldwide in 9 years.

Documentary mini task

A documentary is an informative style of filming that captures real life people and issues on varies of subjects in society, documenting opinions and views of the people. First established in the 1920's Bill Nichols was the man to introduce the terms and conditions of 6 documentaries'.
The first type of documentary is an expository one, these usually have a voiceover explaining the images on screen giving facts and informative information on the topic. It emphasises its points and explains what's going on, on screen in a firm authoritative voice a example of this is The Queen mother, this has moving images of real footage and a voiceover explaining the life of those in the shots.

The observational documentary records and shows events and real life depictions of those involved with no involvement of the director, the documentary focusing on having a natural opinion with no biases. a example of this is Nanook of the north, in the hour and 20 minute film it follows the life of northern eskimos, with no narrator and only observational images it shows the life of the people and how they live.

The next type is the interactive documentary in this the director is present and can be seen interviewing or giving their own opinion on the subject, arguing and talking face to face with the interviewees, for example Kurt and Courtney, with direct involvement of the director Nick Broomfield and live interviews with participants, on a interesting topic, murder, to make the documentary interesting.

A reflexive documentary is like the interactive accept the director attempts to expose the true meaning of the topic and captures everyday life to create a heartfelt and raw message. Lastly a performance documentary involves movie style footage and recreations to amplify the severity of the situation to the audience and focus’ on the stylized version of the subject to make the audience feel more engaged, a example of this is man with a movie camera, a Russian documentary that shows the raw life's of the soviet citizens and the life they live and their struggles.

My personal favourite of the 5 is the interactive or the performance style of filming, in the interactive the director gets to become part of the work and gets a chance not to just be stuck behind the camera and is able to express their opinions freely and become more engrossed with the process. The performance documentaries are the ones I watch the most, as a visual learner I enjoy seeing the live action footage and being able to visualize the events to understand the whole situation and become more connected with the characters. A example of this is TLC documentary shows like the health stories with reconstructions and real stories.

I find the observational documentary’s the most unbiased as they don’t contain interviews to present people’s opinions or the argumentative side of the directors involvement either therefore no feelings about the matter by the people involved can be expressed.

Personally I feel though some are used purely for entertainment like medical stories and weird occurrences like my strange addiction, some genuinely show real issues our planet and the people face in cultures and different parts of the world, and it is important for us to have knowledge of the issues others face and understand more about the people we live with as a society, for example blue planet.
